PHPA is the workhorse polymer of modern water-based drilling mud. Here's what field engineers should know about dosing, shear and inhibition.
Partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (PHPA) is the backbone of most modern water-based drilling fluid systems. It encapsulates reactive clays, lowers filtrate volume, reduces friction on the drill string and helps stabilise unconsolidated formations without the environmental baggage of oil-based mud.

How PHPA works downhole
The polymer's carboxylate groups adsorb onto exposed clay surfaces, coating cuttings before they can hydrate and disperse into the mud. This gives you cleaner shakers, lower dilution rates and — critically — a more stable wellbore in reactive shale sections.
Degree of hydrolysis matters. Around 30% hydrolysis gives the best balance between adsorption onto clay and solubility in typical make-up water. Below 20% the polymer under-performs as an inhibitor; above 40% it becomes far more sensitive to calcium and salt.
Typical field dosing
- Spud mud: 0.25–0.5 kg / m³ (0.1–0.2 lb/bbl)
- Shale inhibition mud: 1.5–3.0 kg / m³ (0.5–1.0 lb/bbl)
- Coiled-tubing friction reducer: 0.3–0.8 kg / m³
- Water-well / HDD bore: 0.5–1.5 kg / m³ depending on formation
Mixing procedure at the rig
- Pre-treat make-up water: soda ash to drop calcium below 200 mg/L, caustic to pH 9.0–9.5.
- Add PHPA slowly through the hopper over 15–20 minutes — never in slugs.
- Allow 30 minutes of circulation for full yield before evaluating viscosity.
- Top up 0.2–0.4 kg/m³ per circulation to replace polymer lost on cuttings.

Watch-outs
- High shear (jet nozzles, mud motors) will chop long-chain PHPA — dose downstream where possible.
- Divalent cations (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺) precipitate PHPA. Soften the make-up water or use a scavenger.
- PHPA is a viscosifier as well as an inhibitor — track funnel viscosity and PV/YP together.
- Bacterial degradation in long-standing pits: use a biocide on wells drilled over multiple weeks.
PHPA vs the alternatives
Against KCl-only systems, PHPA delivers comparable shale inhibition at far lower chloride discharge — an important advantage where produced water disposal is regulated. Against oil-based mud, PHPA systems are cheaper to dispose of and safer to handle, at the cost of somewhat lower performance in deep, highly reactive gumbo shales. Many operators run PHPA plus a low concentration of KCl or an amine inhibitor to get most of the benefit of both.
